From the winning team that brought the joys of Dragon’s Love Tacos, Secret Pizza Party, and Those Darn Squirrels have now brought those Darn Squirrels and Old Man Fookwire back with a new nemesis to conquer.
This book begins much as the previous Darn Squirrels book had. Fookwire lives in a house at the edge of town alone and waits for spring for the birds to come. The squirrels are always pulling pranks, but this time when loud noises startle Fookwire it is not the squirrels’ fault. Just across the stream Little Old Lady Hu, the local baker, is moving in with her cat Muffins. Muffins is a mischievous cat, who most view as a real jerk. Muffins bullies the squirrels, frightens the birds, and upsets Old Man Fookwire’s calming hobbies. The squirrels plot to stop this ferocious cat all night and come up with a plan. 🙂
Once again this story is full of funny moments and light heated tom foolery. Though I love this duo of Adam Rubi and Daniel Salmieri, I feel this book fell a little shorter than the others of its kind. Those Darn Squirrels was a good read, but adding in the cat next door seems to make this book more busy and a much longer and more challenging read. With it being so long winded my son only sat through reading it one time through. For older children with longer attention spans I don’t believe this would be a problem.
Once again the illustrations are complete and work well with the story, even adding more to the experience, and while I feel the narration was too wordy, the story is still worth the read and will give you several laughs and bring a smile to your face.This book is still absolutely deserving of a spot on your shelves just bear in mind it is a much bigger commitment then the previous 3 of their books I have reviewed here.
